Free contraception is now available in Ireland for all women aged between 17 and 35 years. In order to qualify you will need to have a valid prescription from your doctor and we will need confirmation of your Personal Public Service Number (PPSN) and your date of birth.
What types of contraception are included?
This scheme applies the following forms of contraception –
- The oral contraceptive pill
- contraceptive patches
- contraceptive injections
- contraceptive implants
- contraceptive intrauterine devices (also known as coils)
Do I need to pay for my doctor consultation?
No, your family doctor consultation is free. This also includes a repeat visit to your family doctor if you need to have an implant or intrauterine device fitted.
What about the morning after pill?
The morning after pill (or emergency hormonal contraception) is also included in this scheme for all women in this age group. There is no need to attend your family doctor as the entire process can be looked after here in the pharmacy.

How do I get free contraception?
You can avail of this service by dropping your prescription in or asking your family doctor to send it to us using Healthmail. If you need to avail of the morning after pill service there is no need to make an appointment. Just drop in as soon as you can and ask to speak to the pharmacist.
