Staying Safe in the Sun

Wexford is getting hot!  We are appealing to all to stay safe in the sun.  A few simple precautions will make sure that you don’t pay a price for enjoying the fine weather.

  • Wear sunblock (even on cloudy days).  Use at least Factor 15 and also ensure you are getting protection against UVA rays.  Apply 15 to 20 minutes before going out and reapply every two hours or more often if sweating or swimming.
  • Make sure to apply sunblock to all areas.  Don’t forget the toes, ears and back of the neck.
  • Wear a hat and wraparound sunglasses.
  • Try to be in the shade or indoors when UV rays are at their strongest – 11am to 3pm.
  • Take extra care if at the beach or out on a boat as the sun’s rays are reflected off the water.
  • Don’t leave children or pets unattended in cars.
  • Take care with alcohol.  Alcohol can cause dehydration and also increase the risk of you falling asleep.  Don’t swim after consuming alcohol.

Heat Stroke

If you stay in the sun too long you may get heat stroke.  Heat Stroke is high body temperature caused by a hot environment.  It can cause serious health problems.  You can reduce your risk of developing heat stroke by taking the precautions mentioned above; by avoiding strenuous exercise when it is hot; and by staying hydrated.  Avoid alcohol and caffeine drinks.  Take plenty of water.  Remember that thirst is not the best indicator of dehydration.  Urine colour is better.  If your urine looks dark, it might be a sign that you need more fluids.  Heat stroke is often preceded by heat exhaustion.  Signs of heat exhaustion include dizziness, confusion and headache.

Prescription Medicines

Remember that you can burn faster if you are taking certain prescription medicines.  Our pharmacists will be happy to advise you.

We have a wide range of sunblocks in stock and a full range of Foster Grant sunglasses.  If you’ve overdone it we can also advise on the best treatments for sunburn.
